The Broad Beach Residence is a 2-story private oceanfront home distinguished by its amorphous shaped form that rises and hovers above the outdoor space below. Completed in 2020, the 16,000 SF home takes inspiration from the surrounding environment and seamlessly transitions from inside to outside. Designed to maximize ocean views, the residence acts as both a home and an art gallery.
Columns were sparingly used and located to achieve the “floating” appearance of the second story mass, allowing for large open spaces on the first floor. Sculptural stairs anchor the architecture, further connecting the indoors to outdoors.
The structure utilizes a mix of steel, concrete, and wood framing. The roof is supported by a combination of wood shear walls and steel special moment frames that transfer to steel moment frames on the second floor, allowing for open spaces on the ground floor. Along the street-facing side of the home, the grade sits significantly higher than the oceanfront requiring concrete retaining walls to stabilize the structure.
