Multi-Hazard Performance versus Typical Code Design
Notes:
This slide shows the performance objectives selected for the First Hawaiian Center project example.
In general, a comprehensive performance-based approach would be particularly advantageous for high-rise buildings in regions of significant hurricane exposure, and for the rehabilitation of existing buildings.
The generally observed trend of wind-tunnel testing yielding significantly lower structural forces could allow many new buildings to utilize performance-based engineering without necessarily incurring greater construction costs than a code-designed building.
