Selection of Wind Design Level for Serviceability
Serviceability and Motion Tolerance Performance Level
Requires climatological and directionality analysis based on recorded data
Serviceability acceptance criteria for drift to limit damage to nonstructural elements needs case-by-case assessment
Occupant tolerance criteria for rms acceleration motion, such as ISO 6897
Wind-tunnel testing is the primary analysis tool
Requires dynamic structural properties
Notes:
The suggested performance criteria of the National Research Council of Canada (1985), Irwin (1978), and ISO 6897 - 1984 are loosely based on the expectation that no more than 2 percent of the occupants of the top one-third of the building should object to the motion, a condition predicated on 5- to 10-year recurrence rates.
