Historical wind speed records have limitations in their use for extreme events. The typical 20 - 50 year availability of historical data is generally adequate to define wind speeds in the 1 to 50-year range where serviceability issues predominate. The results of the hurricane model need to augment the extreme wind frequency distribution analysis based on historical climatological data.
This figure shows that both analyses are required to adequately define the hazard curve over the range of return periods appropriate for structural performance assessments. Note that this site shows an unusually large difference between the apparent 50-year and 475-year wind speeds.
