4. Do not ignore gravity loads.
•Inclusion or exclusion of the gravity loads
can have a pronounced effect on the shape
of the push-over curve and the member
yielding and failure sequence.
•Example:
–Due to the unsymmetric distribution of
+ and - reinforcements in R/C beams,
gravity load delays the onset of yielding
and cracking in the beams, resulting
in a stiffer structure at lower
magnitudes of base shear.
–The ultimate capacity of the
structure, is usually reduced
with increasing gravity load.
