2013 marks a significant milestone in the history of John A. Martin & Associates; 60 years of structural engineering excellence and an unwavering dedication to our clients. The firm was founded on April 12, 1953 by John A. “Jack” Martin and has served clients, institutions and municipalities across the globe from its headquarters in Los Angeles since. JAMA is marking 2013 with a variety of internal and external improvements and initiatives, so stay tuned for more announcements and updates.
After decades of association and dedication to John A. Martin & Associates, Kai-Chen Tu (26 years), Kan Patel (28 years) and Marvin Mittelstaedt (41 years) will retire from practice this Spring. All of us at JAMA wish each of these special individuals the best and applaud them for their innumerable project achievements and especially for their personal friendships. Their accomplishments and contributions have left an indelible mark not only on the firm, but the entire Southern California structural engineering industry. Congratulations!
JAMA Principal Dr. Farzad Naeim is one of four distinguished experts selected to serve on the Structural Design Review Team (SDRT) for the San Francisco Transbay Tower. Magnusson Klemencic Associates will serve as the structural engineer of record for this historic project, which includes an office tower of 60 stories above grade and three basements. The structural design is performed in accordance with the 2010 San Francisco Building Code, including the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection Administrative Bulletin 083, which utilizes a non-prescriptive seismic design.
Construction of Cal Poly SLO’s Center for Science and Math is on schedule and slated to open in fall 2013. The $119 million, 189,000 square foot building is a powerful symbol of the central nature of science and mathematics in the University’s polytechnic curriculum, and was designed to inspire curiosity and teamwork in the teaching and learning process. JAMA’s BIM Director Marcello Sgambelluri, will be a featured speaker at the ninth Revit Technology Conference Australasia in Auckland, New Zealand. Scheduled to take place from Thursday May 16 to Saturday May, 18, 2013, the conference will once again explore the latest trends, technologies and best practices in Revit and BIM as a means of streamlining the building procurement and construction process.
JAMA Principal Dr. Farzad Naeim will be one of two US academics and practitioners teaching a short class on state-of-the-art in seismic analysis and design of tall buildings at the School for Advanced Studies of Pavia, Italy. Scheduled for April 2-12, 2013, the class is organized by the UME Graduate School and will feature lectures, workshops and hands-on project instruction.
As part of the firm’s ongoing focus in attracting the best local and national talent, JAMA participated in three job fairs in early 2013. JAMA Principals, Project Managers and Staff held booths and talked to dozens of students at UCLA, UCSD and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
JAMA, in collaboration with Los Angeles architects of RTKL, took home the 2013 Canstruction People’s Choice Award on January 10, 2013. The team’s “aVOID Hunger” was made entirely from canned food in a 10’x10’x8’ space. The unveiling of all Canstruction designs and award judging was held as part of the monthly Downtown LA Artwalk, and proceeds from the event benefitted the LA Regional Food Bank.
