John A. Martin & Associates is providing structural engineering services for several of Downtown Los Angeles’ newest towers. One of those notable efforts is Trumark Urban’s development at Grand and Eleventh (TEN50) which recently broke ground. The 151-unit project is touted as the first ever to offer a drone landing pad. Located on a 6th floor amenity deck, the space is intended for Amazon deliveries. The company recently received a green light to test drones for this use.

The Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid in Memphis, TN opened to great fanfare this past weekend. JAMA provided seismic retrofit and renovation design services for this complex project, which turned a 20,000-seat event arena into a Bass Pro Shop Retail space and wilderness-inspired hotel called the Big Cypress Lodge. As one of the largest retail stores in the world, the facility includes general and specialty retail areas, a boat launch directly onto the Mississippi River, a Waterfowl Heritage Center in partnership with Ducks Unlimited, restaurants and bars, a bowling center, and a 28-story freestanding glass elevator that connects visitors to a glass-floored observation deck.
After weeks of planning and days of “can-struction”, John A. Martin & Associates and RTKL Architect’s creation, “The Not So Very Hungry Caterpillar”, is ready for unveiling! This is the third year JAMA and RTKL have teamed in CANstruction LA, an annual fundraising effort that brings awareness to hunger by asking teams of designers to create structures exclusively out of canned goods. The team’s creation won an honorable mention, but more importantly was part of the effort that raised $4k and 44k cans for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Congrats to all who participated!
The Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) Board of Governors has selected the Emerson College Los Angeles Campus for an Award of Excellence in the category of Structural Systems Design. Conferred during the 2015 AEI Conference in Milwaukee, the event also announced that the project won best overall project/most innovative project honors. JAMA Project Manager Matt Timmers was asked to give a 10 minute presentation on the project during a presentation session held before the awards banquet.
Online fashion retailer JustFab needed an inexpensive yet edgy interiors look for their corporate headquarters in El Segundo. They, along with architect Moshiri Associates, turned to John A. Martin for guidance on structural engineering calculations for one of the most low-cost, yet ubiquitous materials around: shipping containers. With a space layout that establishes multiple “zones” within the office, the containers have been repurposed with windows and doors for functionality and light penetration to serve as everything from a kitchen space to eating pods to conference rooms.
JAMA’s BIM Director Marcello Sgambelluri has been certified as a Revit Structure professional for 2015. Marcello has been certified on Revit Architect for the last two years but this year marks the first that certification was available for Revit Structure. AUTODESK certification offers a benefit to project teams and clients who may require special skills in Revit or particular expertise in the integration of Revit Architecture / Revit Structural models. JAMA works almost exclusively in Revit Structure to more efficiently process architectural intent in the structural design and minimize information loss during the export of BIM models. JAMA is actively working on certifying additional staff members to meet the needs of our complex projects.
