PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND EARTHQUAKE, MARCH 28, 1964
Fourth Avenue Landslide Scarp, Anchorage, Alaska
[LANDSLIDES] The scarp of the Fourth Avenue landslide in downtown Anchorage where two and one half blocks of shops, bars, and stores slowly settled until their entrances were below street level. The Fourth Avenue area showed evidence of earthquake-induced sliding before the 1964 earthquake. A total of about 30 blocks of dwellings and commercial buildings were destroyed or severely damaged in downtown Anchorage. Damage in the City of Anchorage was approximately one-half of the total earthquake damage for the State of Alaska. Photograph Credit: U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA.
