Earthquake of October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta, CA. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake was located 96 km south-southeast of San Francisco. It killed 67 people, injured 3,757, and caused an estimated 7 billion dollars in property damage. Although the earthquake occurred in the remote Santa Cruz Mountains, it was one of the costliest natural disasters in United States history.
