As someone with earthquake preparedness responsibilities in the region, you are often in the position of asking other individuals to undertake certain preparedness measures. In addition your responsibilities after an earthquake will keep you from immediately going home to check on your family, neighbors, and friends. It is therefore IMPERATIVE that you are as well prepared as possible.
1. Do you have a family plan that includes:
1.1. an agreed-upon reunion or message point if evacuation is necessary
1.2. knowledge of your children's school or day-care evacuation and pick-up plans
1.3. a person designated outside the region as a coordinating point for messages. (Long distance lines are expected to be in service prior to local lines.)
1.4. special provisions for any elderly or disabled family members or those with special medical needs?
2. Do you and your family know what steps to take during and immediately after an earthquake?
3. Is your house bolted to its foundation?
4. Are cripple walls between foundation and first floor properly braced?
5. Is your water heater strapped to wail studs?
6. Do you know the location of your water, gas and electrical shut-offs and do you know how to operate the valves and switches?
7. Have you reduced non-structural hazards in your home by putting heavy objects on lower shelves, latches on cabinets, bolting book shelves to walls, and removing heavy hanging objects over beds, chairs, sofas, etc.?
8. Have you posted a list of emergency phone numbers?
9. Do you have a several day supply of food and water stored (for your family and pets)?
10. Do you have a First Aid kit and have you received First Aid training?
11. Do you have a flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries?
12. Do you have one or more fire extinguishers, and does your family know how to use them?
13. Are flammable or hazardous liquids such as paints, pest sprays or cleaning products stored in safe locations and in cabinets or secured on lower shelves?
14. Do you have an emergency kit in your car that includes sturdy shoes, a First Aid kit, flashlight, extra water, a list of emergency phone numbers, and large trash bags or a blanket for warmth?
