Eiffel Tower II receives 1999
SEAOC's highest award for Engineering Excellence
The Eiffel Tower II which recently
completed construction in Las Vegas, is a half scale model of
the original Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Design and construction
of this tower involved complex technical and non-technical issues
such as:
Extreme temperature changes and thermal stresses (as much
as 60 from side to side and from day to night).
Fire protection and investigation of several arson scenarios
to optimize fireproofing. This required a complex set on linear
and nonlinear buckling analysis.
Structural detailing necessary to preserve the look of
the original tower while using alternative structural sections.
Complex issues involved in design of the elevator shafts
in light of the small motion tolerance of 1.0 in. over a height
of 540 feet.
Construction issues, including shop and field fabrications,
shipping fabricated components from Phoenix to Las Vegas,
and on site construction
