Qualifications

JAMA has demonstrated capabilities in structural design for all project types and sizes, completed for both the private and public sectors worldwide, including:

· High and Low Rise Office Buildings
· High and Low Rise Residential Complexes
· Convention Centers
· Stadiums, Sports Arenas, and Racetracks
· Theater and Entertainment Complexes
· Hospitals and Medical Centers
· Hotels and Casinos
· Theme Parks
· University Buildings
· Courts, Police Stations, Jails, and Prisons
· Military Facilities
· Parking Structures

Utilizing the latest design techniques, computer applications, and engineering concepts, JAMA creates structural systems based on their efficiency and economic feasibility, as well as consistency with each project's architectural theme. JAMA is committed to seeking the maximum benefit of materials, minimization of structural construction costs, closely monitored budgetary and scheduling constraints, continuity of design team efforts through all project phases, and attention to detail and technical accuracy.

Seismic Design & Analysis
John A. Martin & Associates, Inc., is unique in its seismic design and analysis capabilities. The firm has designed numerous high-rise and long span structures in zones of high seismicity, and routinely performs nonlinear, linear, static, and dynamic seismic analyses of complex structures. JAMA has been a leader in structural design for major base isolated hospital buildings. The firm has been selected by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD) to perform review and plan checking for these buildings throughout California.

JAMA's Research & Development department has been awarded grants by such diverse agencies as the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the County of Los Angeles, the California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for studying various damage characteristics of earthquakes and their impact on seismic design practice. In addition, the standard text for teaching seismic design in more than a dozen top universities, the Seismic Design Handbook, was written by a JAMA staff member.

This research, combined with the numerous seismic structural upgrades performed by the Martin organization, has led to the development of efficient and cost effective schemes for the seismic upgrade of many existing structures.

Wind Load Analysis
Buildings are designed for wind forces in much the same manner as earthquake forces, taking member stresses and interstory drifts caused by wind forces into consideration. Special design considerations, wind loads, and design criteria are developed, utilizing both in-house computerized structural analyses and outside wind specialists as necessary. Having designed structural systems for many well- known buildings to efficiently resist wind loads in high-wind regions such as Chicago, Florida, Hawaii, and Guam, the JAMA staff can address the most sophisticated specific wind analyses and design requirements, including consideration of wind as a dynamic load and development of finite element dynamic analyses.

Vibration Analysis
The staff and computer resources at JAMA provide efficient and feasible solutions for the most complex vibration problems. The Martin organization has developed special proprietary computer programs for vibration analysis and design. These sophisticated software programs for finite element analysis of 3-dimensional acoustic systems may be used, for example, to evaluate and optimize the acoustic performance of sound-sensitive arenas such as complex concert halls and theaters. One of the most widely consulted references on the subject, the AISC publication Design Practice to Prevent Floor Vibrations, was written by a JAMA staff member.

Research & Development
Since its inception in 1984, the Martin firm's Research & Development (R&D) division has been on the cutting edge of engineering and computer technology, beginning with the application of expert systems and artificial intelligence, and continuing as a presence in the frontiers of multimedia computing. The R&D division was founded on the premise that today's unique structural design solutions demand more than what is provided by off-the-shelf computer software packages. Taking the best technology publicly available and developing it into tailor-made computing facilities, design methodologies, analysis software, and earthquake design technologies is the department's mission.

The respect with which the R&D division is regarded in the industry is demonstrated by its selection by the State of California's Office of Strategic Technology to develop the first multimedia earthquake encyclopedia. This exceptional team was also responsible for the development of MEDCASE, a multimedia teaching system used at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Another area of targeted research is base isolation systems and their response to seismic activity. One of the unique, proprietary software programs developed by the R&D division is OUTBASIS, an interactive program for the evaluation of nonlinear response of base isolation bearings and other energy-dissipating devices. Snapshots of system behavior can be examined at critical moments, and key building response to parameters can be evaluated on screen as functions of time, enabling the user to evaluate building response to seismic stresses.

Computer & CAD Facilities
John A. Martin & Associates operates an in-house computer network of more than 100 engineering and CAD workstations utilizing a wide variety of software programs including CATIA/CADAM. These programs include simple interactive programs (i.e., beam and column design), fully integrated design systems, and complex 3-dimensional dynamic analysis programs. The technical staff includes a team of computer application specialists to assist and train the firm's engineering and support staff.

The implementation of CAD has provided JAMA with an effective tool to augment quality control, reduce duplication of effort, and effectively produce accurate and legible structural drawings that can be easily integrated into the entire construction documents package. JAMA's extensive library of reference details is continuously upgraded and refined by the firm's most experienced engineers.
This combination of in-house computer capabilities, state-of-the-art proprietary software, and computer application specialists enables the Martin firm to provide swift, reliable, and cost effective solutions to any structural design problem, regardless of complexity.
